You'd think the smartest, most capable people would be most resistant to AI brain rot. Actually, they're often the most susceptible.
Here's why: capable people can see AI's potential immediately. They understand how it works. They know how to leverage it effectively. So they start using it for everything, confident they're staying in control.
But that confidence is the trap.
When you're good at using AI, you don't notice the moment when "using AI effectively" becomes "unable to function without AI." You don't see the skills atrophying because you're getting results. You mistake efficiency for capability.
I've seen this with developers who started using AI to accelerate their coding. They were thoughtful about it at first—using AI for boilerplate, learning from its suggestions, understanding the code it generated.

But if you're still developing those skills? AI short-circuits the learning process. It lets you produce outputs that look professional before you've developed the thinking that makes them actually good.
This creates a dangerous dynamic: AI raises the floor (anyone can produce decent work) while potentially lowering the ceiling (fewer people develop exceptional capabilities).
We're creating a world where everyone can be mediocre, but fewer people become great.
What Thoughtful AI Adoption Actually Looks Like
So what's the answer? We can't uninvent AI. And we shouldn't want to—it genuinely is a powerful tool for human enhancement.
The answer is intentionality. Thoughtful adoption. Strategic use rather than blanket deployment.
Here's what that looks like in practice:
1. Use AI for tasks that don't build capability. If you're copying data from one system to another, automate it. That's not building cognitive skills—it's just burning time. But if you're analyzing customer feedback to identify patterns? That's capability-building. Do it manually until you've developed the intuition, then use AI to scale what you've learned.
2. Always understand the "how" and "why." When AI gives you an answer, make sure you understand how it arrived at that conclusion. Can you explain the logic? Could you reproduce the thinking process if AI disappeared tomorrow? If not, you're becoming dependent, not enhanced.
3. Deliberately practice the skills AI is automating. If you use AI to write, still write manually sometimes. If you use AI to analyze data, still do manual analysis regularly. If you use AI to code, still solve problems without it. Treat it like physical exercise—you need to actively maintain capabilities that AI is taking over.
4. Use AI to go deeper, not just faster. The real power of AI isn't letting you do the same work faster. It's letting you tackle problems you couldn't address before. Use the time AI saves you to think more strategically, build better systems, develop new capabilities. Don't use it to just do more of the same.
5. Build teams that retain critical thinking. In organizations, this means being deliberate about what you automate and what you don't. It means ensuring your team still understands the fundamentals. It means measuring capability development, not just efficiency gains.
The Choice Ahead
Here's what keeps me up at night: we're making these choices right now, mostly unconsciously, and the consequences won't be clear for years.
By the time we realize we've outsourced too much of our thinking, it might be too late to get those capabilities back. By the time organizations realize their teams have lost critical skills, they might not be able to rebuild them.
But here's what gives me hope: awareness changes everything.
Once you see AI brain rot happening, you can make different choices. You can be intentional about what you automate and what you practice. You can use AI to enhance your thinking rather than replace it. You can build systems that make humans more capable, not less.
The tools aren't going away. The question is whether we'll be thoughtful enough to use them well.
AI can reshape everything—but only if we're willing to do the cognitive work that matters. Only if we're willing to stay sharp even when it's easier to let AI do the thinking. Only if we're committed to building capabilities, not just achieving outputs.
